Maths

INTENT

To ensure all pupils:

  • receive a relevant, challenging and enjoyable mathematics curriculum;
  • develop the use of mathematical language through speaking and listening, including reasoning and explanations;
  • understand the value of mathematics in everyday situations;
  • become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, developing conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately;
  • be able to reason mathematically by justifying, making links to known facts, or providing proof using mathematical language;
  • challenge concepts through solving problems by applying mathematic knowledge.
  • make links to mathematical knowledge and understanding within other subjects.

IMPLEMENTATION

In our Nursery and Reception, our young mathematicians will be provided with many exciting opportunities, both indoors and outdoors, through planned purposeful play and a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities, to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating, simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shape, space, and measure.

We believe in teaching Maths in a way that is fun, creative, and engaging. Our goal is to promote a love of maths and help children see its importance in the world around them. We ensure that our lessons are interactive, allowing children to explore and enjoy their mathematical journey.

Typically, our maths lessons use a range of manipulatives as we follow the ‘concrete, abstract, pictorial’ approach. This method is vital for building a solid understanding of mathematical processes, skills, and concepts. We also focus on problem-solving to make maths relevant to everyday life and encourage children to explain their reasoning, which helps deepen their understanding.

Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 follow the White Rose schemes of learning, which carefully integrate the concrete, pictorial, and abstract strategies when teaching different calculations. In Nursery, we currently use the Master the Curriculum maths scheme, but we are excited to begin trialling the White Rose Scheme soon. This structured approach ensures that every child in our school has a strong foundation in Maths, setting them up for future success while igniting a passion for learning.
